Not having anything we needed to do today, Saul and I took ourselves over to the island as neither of us had ever been. We went knowing that the 2nd Annual Veuve Cliquot Manhattan Polo Classic was today, and we were fully prepared to avoid it at all costs. Prince Harry was playing in it, and Saul thought that maybe Pimms would be served. Veuve Cliquot is one of my favorite things in the world, and I was hoping to nab a class. Those two drunken thoughts plus the fact that neither of us had ever seen a live polo match meant that we were in the stands watching the game all afternoon.
No champagne (I'm too cheap to get it when it is $15 a GLASS and $70 for the bottle), but we had a wonderful time! I love horses, so it is a pretty good sport for me to watch right off the bat, AND polo is AMAZING for people watching. I am telling you, we heard some of the craziest conversations and saw some of the WORST clothing I have ever seen...and of course, you know these people thought they looked super hot.
The valley girls sitting behind us were dumb as bricks. Example:
Boy 1: Here, have some of this rose.
Girl 1: Um, well, I don't usually like rose.
Boy 1: This is a really good rose by [winery]--it is light and refreshing but not too sweet.
Girl 1: Ok.
[a few minutes later]
Boy 1: So how do you like it?
Girl 1: [sounding like she is giving her opinion to Wine Spectator magazine] I love it--it is so light and refreshing but isn't too sweet.
Boy 1: [crickets]
Now if she had had an OUNCE of sarcasm in her voice, it would have been one thing. But noooooooo, she was DEAD SERIOUS and had no idea she was parroting his own words back at him.
It was so so special.
Anyway, here are some pictures of HRH Prince Harry....woo :)
